Domain name ! The .web extension, sold at 135 million dollars
The verdict fell on July 27, 2016: the .web generic Top-Level-Domain was auctioned to Nu Dot Co for $ 135 million. The US company has won the bid to exploit the domain name coveted by eight candidates and can now sell and lease this domain extension.
Under the New gTLD (Generic Top Level Domains) Program, an auction was organized by the ICANN-approved Auction Services Provider (Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers). . The objective was to resolve the dispute between the applicants for the purchase of the .shop gTLD in January 2016.
The .web domain name extension is considered the successor to the popular Top-Level-Domain .com, which has been used for many years. A majority of the coveted domain names have already been assigned to .com and many companies now want to be managers of .web. ICANN is behind this unrivaled web auction. The amount of the auction is a real record, being seven times higher than the acquisition of a standard Top-Level-Domain. The previous record of a bid was $ 41.5 million for the .shop e-commerce extension that was purchased by the Japanese company GMO Registry.
